My Toby Speakers
My Toby Story
As a young engineer working in Fort Worth, TX, I often went out to lunch with friends in the Montgomery St – Camp Bowie area, and put eyes on the old Toby shop on Montgomery with curiosity. I walked in one day, took a listen to Toby Speakers, and was immediately sold. Toby had a demo room set up to compare his speakers against the name brands. There was no audible doubt that the Tobys either matched or outperformed all of the well-know, high-priced speakers in the room. I bought a pair of unfinished 2.5s from Toby in the early 80s (40 years ago now) for $325. Later in the 90s, I bought a pair of older 2.6s from my friend Matt at work for $80. These had recently been refurbished by Toby with new speaker cones and tweeters. About twenty years ago, the pair of 2.5s developed a tear in the paper cone. Toby said “Not to worry”, dabbed some gooey gunk on them, and the pair have been going strong ever since. They still perform beautifully today. I can’t tell you how much enjoyment I have gotten out of my Toby 2.5s and 2.6s.
I just recently retired and took my four Tobys to my current abode. I decided to have the four speaker cabinets repaired and reskinned. I took the four of them to a local cabinetmaker, Octavio Fernandez Coria, to have the work done. The four speakers came back looking and sounding great. I look forward to many continued years of enjoyment listening to speakers created by a Master in the business, Toby Guynn.
Toby has since passed away. Rest In Peace, Toby, with the knowledge of how many happy souls continue to enjoy the fruits of your talent and labor. And congratulations to True Taylor for continuing the wonderful legacy of Toby Speakers in Fort Worth, TX.

My Toby 2.5 Speakers
This is the original pair of Toby speakers that I bought in the 1980s for $325 a pair. This is how they looked originally. (I don’t have many photos of them in their original, unfinished condition.)

My Toby 2.6 Speakers
I purchased this pair of Toby speakers from my work associate Matt in the 1990s. The speaker cones and tweeters had just been replaced by Toby Guynn, so they were in great condition, soundwise. But the cabinets had suffered some minor water damage and the Formica covering had been damaged in a few places. So, they needed a bit of reconstruction and recovering.
